Save Fosters Freeze, Save the Children!
There’s good news for opponents of the Mitchell Park Senior Center parking lot who just lost in their cause to deny 10 parking spaces to seniors! I know you’re suffering from protest withdrawal already and need a new fix. So, I’ve got another fight for you: Save Fosters Freeze! For the Children! (Use that last part, it always works on everything else.)
Yup, there is a proposal to bulldoze the old Fosters Freeze and on the lot build a spanking new multi-story, modern building. Developers Dave Bjerre and Debbie Garcia are seeking to build a 25,000 sf., four-story building with commercial and residential space and underground parking. The project would have 7,400 square feet of commercial and retail space on the ground floor, topped with three stories of 14 residential condominiums.
I know, the same people who will oppose this are mostly the same people who call for downtown living units so people can live and work in town. No problem — you can put a smokescreen around your hypocricy by shifting focus to the height of the building. That always gets other protesters riled up. And make sure you talk about the poor children, going there after school and after ball games and not finding any ice cream. (Don’t let anyone point out that the bottom floor will be retail and Fosters will almost certainly be offered a lease).
Remember the lessons of your effort, albeit failed, in the Mitchell Park fight. You chose to exagerate the issue with signs like “Don’t Pave Paradise” and it worked! Granted, this usually only works on the least intelligent who buy into slogans like that (and ones like “Change” and “Hope”) without doing any research, but that’s okay because there are plenty of these people to be found among the ranks of the local protest-anything movement here in SLO. My personal favorite protest sign would be “Save Fosters Freeze, Save the Children.” That’s a good one. Or how about, “Don’t let Developers Kill Ice Cream!” Hey, I know, “Ice Cream Warming.”
Have some fun, so I can have some fun watching.
