First Nutcase Surfaces to Save Foster’s Freeze
A few days ago i wrote the article Save Fosters Freeze, Save the Children, where I said that it would not be long before all the crazies in town came out to try and save the downtown SLO Fosters Freeze, now that they are defeated at Mitchell Park. It’s started. Fool number one on this topic is a S. W. Hand who wrote a Letter to the Editor in The Tribune today entitled “Fight for SLO’s History.” In it, the writer laments that “it seems no one cares about saying goodbye to Foster’s Freeze.” He or she goes on, “I think Foster’s Freeze should be declared a landmark.” LOL!!!
Okay, so the writer is a nut, but don’t these people ever think beyond their “feelings.” For the sake of argument, let’s say that the goal is a good one, as opposed to just plain laughable, and think beyond feelings and how the city would handle this, as a practical matter. While I’m sure that Hand would not mind giving the greedy property owner a court order to man the ice cream counters forever, that’s not the way it works. They cannot force them to continue operations. They cannot force them to not sell their property. The owner would need to be compensated for the true value of the property. I don’t know the square footage, but raw downtown land goes for about $200 a foot now. Do the math, I’m sure it’s in the millions.
So, the city would have to purchase the old Fosters Freeze for millions of dollars, then pay to maintain it. I don’t think the city would want to operate a ice cream shop, so it would be mothballed. But at least we could point at it as we drove by and think, I remember when…
but, the next thing you know, we’d see another letter from Hand, crying about how the city’s depleted coffers (she’ll not acknowledge her “landmark” was a waste of money) need to be filled for some other absurd ideas of hers and needs to raise taxes. Blah, blah, blah.
Are these people for real?
